Between Hell And Freedom
Escape And The Journey Home
The Third Reich has fallen. Amid the smoke and ruins of the Nazi command bunker, a young woman working as a civilian teletype operator faces a desperate fight for survival. Captured by the Russians, she joins forces with a German doctor in a harrowing bid to escape.
Leaving the hell of captivity behind, she and the doctor travel hundreds of miles on foot, moving under cover of night across the scarred landscape of a defeated and divided Germany. Their destination is the Zone Limit, the border where the Russian Zone ends and the American Zone begins. For her, this race Between Hell and Freedom is a chance to return home to family, friends, and the life stolen from her many years ago.
After crossing the Zone Limit, she was captured by the Americans. She must prove she is not a Nazi, but her work on top-secret communications equipment at Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair leaves her captors uncertain whether she is a valuable intelligence asset or a war criminal. In the denazification interrogation, she describes her life after being forced into the Hitler Youth Group at ten and recruited into the signal corps as a Lightning Girl at eighteen. During her confinement she begins to fall in love with a young American soldier, then she discovers she is carrying the child of the German doctor with whom she escaped.
This soon to be released historical novel based on a true story that was kept secret for almost 80 years.
